Pan Amsterdam & The Free Band + MADMADMAD & Donwill at The Jazz Cafe, November 21st
Trumpeter, rapper and sonic wanderer Pan Amsterdam has carved out one of the most distinctive voices operating at the intersection of jazz and hip-hop today.
Pan Amsterdam is a musical enigma wrapped in an enduring riddle. His creator is a jazz musician from Houston who’s found fame working with Detroit punk rock God, Iggy Pop, and British indie royalty, Metronomy, and now makes shapeshifting, adventurous hip hop out of the music’s spiritual home, New York.
He’s an irreverent character born out of frustration and named after a misunderstanding, yet one who’s on the verge of releasing his fifth album of truth-slaying, genre-crossing rhymes and beats. The result is a catalogue that feels both deeply rooted in Black American musical tradition and completely untethered by convention.

Over the last few years, MADMADMAD have built a steady reputation as one of the UK’s most thrilling electronic acts through an unbeatable live show that’s cemented their status as true left-of-center innovators in their class. The London trio have showcased a beguiling and constantly shapeshifting sound best described as Mr Oizo on, and acid inspired by Black Devil Disco Club and Parliament-Funkadelic’s otherworldly looseness, as well as the early 2000’s electro of the Chemical Brothers and Aphex Twin, and the rough-and-ready dance-punksonics of New York City—think Liquid Liquid, ESG, and James Chance and the Contortions with a thoroughly modern coat of paint lovingly splattered atop the framework those bands established.
MADMADMAD emerged out of impromptu late night jam sessions in a London flat-turn-studio. The result of those DIY excursions was a self-released white-label EP that sold like hotcakes and generated an instant level of buzz for the group along with their energetic performances around Europe and the UK.
After the release of their EP “Run” and a successful tour across the UK and Europe at the end of last year, the trio went back to the studio to record “Overload”, a 6-track EP that finds MADMADMAD expanding their fascinating discography, diving deep into the sounds of mutant disco and early electronic music to great effects.
“We’ve been working on this in our new studio under the arches,” Kevin explains. “We found this place in South London. It’s under the train tracks and the tube goes by every 4 minutes, you can hear it on all our tracks.”

Donwill is the kind of creative who refuses to stay in one lane – and that's exactly what makes him so compelling. As a rapper with his group Tanya Morgan, he helped create the underground classic Brooklynati, but music is just one part of his story. Behind the scenes, Donwill's music production work has earned him credits on everything from Michelle Buteau's A Buteau-ful Mind (Netflix) to Last Week Tonight with John Oliver (HBO). Whether he's writing rhymes, hosting conversations, curating playlists or crafting beats Donwill brings the same authenticity and creative vision that's made him a go-to collaborator across music, television, and podcasting.
