He contributes to medical education and professional development across the insurance industry through his involvement with the LUCID and AMUS committees. When symptoms become disability: a GP, OHP and CMO’s perspective on functional disorders Insurers face underwriting and claims decisions involving functional disorders on a daily basis. Clinical presentation can be significant despite limited objective pathology, while fluctuating symptoms and diagnosis may provide limited information about functional capacity or future risk. Using clinical examples, this talk will explore how these conditions are practically assessed in general practice and the workplace, before considering their relevance to underwriting and claims decision-making. Drawing on experience as a CMO, it will discuss and debate effective approaches to assessing risk and function that go beyond standard guidance. Kate Baldry has worked for 23 years in reinsurance and insurance as a research and development underwriter. Kate thrives on improving customer journeys and outcomes, as well as working with clients on product enhancements and refinements to underwriting rules engines. She collaborates with colleagues globally on the Ascent underwriting manual, assisting Hannover Re’s Digital Business Accelerator, as well as participating in various UK ABI groups. Kate is also an ambassador for Women in Protection. Outside of work and spending time with her family, Kate is a voracious reader, sun-seeker and enjoys live music and travelling to new countries. From A to Zinc: Evidence‑Based Use of Vitamins and Supplements Billions are spent on vitamins and supplements every year, but are consumers buying better health or clever marketing? We'll examine the evidence behind popular supplements, identify potential risks and benefits, and discuss the implications for underwriting and claims assessment. Further speaker announcements coming soon....We hope you’ll be able to join us for another informative and entertaining event. Tickets are priced at £75 until 31st October. As usual, our November event will feature a charity raffle. This year our chosen charity is 2wish , who provide support for those affected by sudden death in young people. In addition to the raffle, we’re taking on the #Select74CharityChallenge to raise as much money as possible for this fantastic charity, and we’d love you and your colleagues to get involved too. The concept is simple: SELECT your own challenge, the only rule is that it must be something to do with the number 74. We’re keen for people to select challenges that suit your talents, interests and time available. As long as it’s safe and legal, anything goes! Let us know what your challenge is by emailing select74@outlook.com or contacting one of our committee members. We’ll add your challenge to the list on our JustGiving page (which includes some ideas for challenges) and promote it via email and LinkedIn. All you need to do is complete your challenge, share the JustGiving page with your contacts to encourage donations and use #Select74CharityChallenge to provide progress updates on LinkedIn. We’ve got some brilliant challenges registered so far: a 74 minute walk around Bristol harbour (the Select 74 committee), 74 aerial hoop manoeuvres (Anne Casey), 74 squats a day for 74 days (Emily Clark), 74km cycle ride (Martin Doughty), 74 street signs in North Somerset (Tracy Gibson-Giles), 74 new dance moves (Liz King), running 74km in one month (Coleen Manuel & Felicity Pearce), writing 74 74-word biographies of direct ancestors (Jen Phillips), listening to music by 74 new bands/artists (Jon Rowlands) and recording 74 species of bird in his local area (Chris Wright). We’re looking forward to seeing you at our event in November and hope you will consider taking part in the #Select74CharityChallenge and/or donating via our JustGiving page.
