SLICES OF PORTUGUESE HISTORY Coming home to a country you’d never lived in An Indie Talk with Dulce Maria Cardoso October 27th, 6.30pm - Cidadela de Cascais In 1975, as Angola moved towards independence and civil war broke out, thousands of Portuguese families had to flee in a hurry. They left with a suitcase in hand and everything else behind, bound for a “motherland” many had never seen. They were called retornados . Dulce Maria Cardoso was one of them. In O Retorno ( The Return ), she tells that story through Rui, a teenage boy starting over in a country that didn’t quite know what to do with him. The book was Book of the Year in Portugal, and its English translation won the PEN Translates Award. Not a lecture.
