Cover yourself up. That skirt is too short. Keep your legs together. Nice girls don't sleep around. Don't touch yourself down there, it's dirty. If you enjoy it that much, you must be a slut. You may have a few of your own to add. Now picture a Sunday morning where none of it gets a say. Not because you have argued it down, but because for two and a half hours, in a small room with a few other women, you get to set it to one side and find out what your desire is like without it. This is a circle where women share their experiences of desire, and that sharing is a big part of what makes it work. You always choose how much. Nobody is made to say anything they don't want to, and you will never be asked to confess a secret or explain yourself. Some women say a lot and some say a little, and both are a full part of the morning. The voice that got there first It started out as somebody else's voice. Your mother at the front door: you are not going out dressed like that. A teacher, a church, the magazines. A partner who laughed at the wrong moment. And very often, other women. The girls at school who decided who was a slag. The friend who raised an eyebrow when you said how many people you had slept with. We learned young to keep an eye on each other's sexuality, and to judge it. Then, without noticing, many of us turned the same eye on ourselves. And if you did not want it enough, there were words for that too. Frigid. Prude. Cold. Want it, and you were a slut. Don't, and you were frigid. There was never a right answer. In time the voice can stop sounding like theirs and start sounding like your own. Then it speaks before you do. What it can cost The thing you have never asked for. The pleasure you pretend to feel, or pretend not to. The fantasy you would not admit to anyone. The smaller, tidier version of yourself you bring to bed, and to a great deal else. After enough years of it, some women find they no longer quite know what they want. The voice has been answering for them for so long. Good girls don't. You might. Those rules depend on you believing you are the only one. So we start with hands. I read out a list of things women have wanted, done or pretended, and you put a hand up if one is true for you. Nobody explains a hand. Then we all look round the room, and often you find you are not the only one. Not even close. Then you write down the judgements, the actual words the voice in your head uses, one on each slip of paper. The paper dissolves in a bowl of water, and you watch them go. Not your desire. Your desire stays. Only what other people said about it. And before you leave, if you want it, there is a moment to say what you actually desire, in a room where the answer is yes. A single word is enough. Passing is enough too. What you can count on You choose what you share and how much, and you never have to explain yourself. Everything is an invitation, and you can sit anything out. Everyone stays fully clothed. In this circle the only touch is your own hand, on your own heart, if you want it. Some circles in the year include touch between women, always asked for and always your choice. This one doesn't. The group is small, often three or four women. You do not need any experience or a partner, and most women come on their own. Women come to these circles in their twenties and in their seventies, and every age in between. A note on sensitivity Some of what we touch on may land harder than you expect. The focus is always on desire and the judgements around it, never on harm done to you, and you choose how far to go at every point. This is a gentle space rather than a processing space, and there is time at the end to land properly before anyone goes home. Please tell me when you book if there is anything I should know.
