Changing Your Username on TIME&SPACE: What Happens to Your Old Profile Link
TIME&SPACE · Organiser's Playbook
Change your TIME&SPACE username and the old one keeps redirecting for 90 days, so any link, QR code or bio you already shared still finds you. Here's the exact rule.
In short: Every account gets a username automatically when it signs up, and anyone can change it later in account settings. The rule is one change every 14 days, a 3 to 30 character handle of lowercase letters, numbers, dots, underscores or hyphens, and nothing else. For 90 days after a change, the old username still works: visiting it redirects straight to the new one, and nobody else can register it in the meantime.
Why this exists
Your organiser profile lives at timeandspace.app/u/[username], one permanent address listing every event you've run. That address ends up in more places than most people expect: a bio link, an email signature, a sponsor's due diligence notes, an old blog post. A username that cannot change at all is a problem the moment you rebrand or simply picked something you no longer like. A username that changes with no trace left behind is a worse one, because every one of those links quietly breaks.
What actually happens when you change it
The account's current username moves into the slot of a previous username, timestamped the moment the change is saved, and the new one takes its place. For 90 days from that moment, two things hold at once:
The old address still resolves. /u/[old-username] redirects to /u/[new-username] automatically. A guest who scanned an old QR code, a sponsor with the old link bookmarked, or a search engine that indexed it months ago all land on the right page without knowing anything changed.
The old username stays reserved. Nobody else can register it during the window, which is what stops a stranger claiming it and quietly intercepting whoever follows the old link.
After 90 days, both protections lapse: the redirect stops and the username becomes available to claim again. If you expect to keep pointing people at an old handle past that window, update the link itself rather than relying on the redirect.
The rules on the change itself
A username is 3 to 30 characters: lowercase letters, numbers, dots, underscores or hyphens, with at least one letter or digit so it can never be just dots or dashes on their own. You can change it once every 14 days, the same limit whether you're on the web dashboard or the app, so a handle cannot be grabbed and released faster than anyone could notice it moved.
The rule also blocks picking a username another account changed away from less than 90 days ago, for the same reason the redirect exists: that handle still functionally belongs to whoever it is redirecting for.
The short version
Change your username whenever you like, once every 14 days. For 90 days afterward, the old one keeps redirecting and stays off limits to anyone else, so a link you shared before the change still finds you. After that window, it is simply gone, so move anything permanent, like a printed QR code, to the new address rather than counting on the old one forever.
